This is the closing number from my 2 CD set anthology “A Jazz Life” just released and my Clifford Brown Tribute also just released which is a part of the set . Very emotional for me as my first major Jazz Festival was when I was 13 years old on the bill with Dinah Washington , Gerry Mulligan , Oscar Peterson and Art Blakey. I remember like yesterday being mesmerized in the wings waiting to go on stage watching Dinah Washington sing. At that time I was just getting into Clifford Brown my first major influence on trumpet after Louis Armstrong who changed my musical life and Dinah had done some classic recordings with Clifford. 53 years later I used this track Dinah did in 1957 shortly after Clifford’s tragic car accident and had my arranger add a chorus for me to improvise after her vocal chorus to celebrate his short life. The lyrics are chilling on Benny Golson’s song that he wrote “I remember Clifford” below.
