This is the closing number to my Clifford Brown tribute album. Very emotional for me I was 13 years old and had my first major jazz festival performance at the Atlantic City Jazz festival 1n 1961. I was on the bill with Dinah Washington , Gerry Mulligan , Oscar Peterson and Art Blakey. I was just getting into Clifford Brown at the time my first major influence on trumpet after Louis Armstrong and it changed my musical life. Dinah Washington had done some classic recordings with Clifford and I remember being memorized like yesterday standing in the wings waiting to go on watching her perform. Shortly after Clifford died in that tragic car accident Dinah recorded Benny Golson’s “I remember Clifford” in 1957. I had my arranger take that track and add a chorus for me to improvise on as part of my tribute to Clifford. Those lyrics give me chills !!
