Description:
When I first moved to LA, I met Jim DeJulio, a truly great bass player out of the legendary Ray Brown mould. Jim did his first album using several of his favorite players as guests artists, including Bill Watrous, Eddie Daniels and myself. It was a swinging session with the great Roy McCurdy on drums who was with Cannonball Adderley. I did two bebop classics, “Dewey Square” and “Confirmation”. Steve Allen did the liner notes and it was the first time he heard me, which led to me doing his album on Concord.

Review:
To say that Jim De Julio has been ‘around the block’ would be an understatement. He’s a bass player, and one of the very best jazz has to offer. Jim has been part of many musical cornerstones working the New York Streets with the likes of Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt, Earl Garner, Lee Konitz and Hank Jones. Jim was also the bass player with Frank Sinatra. A common element in Jim’s playing is melody – something not all bass players are proficient in using. As Jim states ‘Learn the melody well, not just how to play it, but play it with your heart. Then when you want to improvise you can do anything.’ Jim was recently inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Society hall of fame.
